SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Mie University Contributes to a Sustainable Carbon Neutral Society as a University Co-creating with the Regional Communities

Mie University is an advanced university in environmental management and SDGs that promotes education, research, and social contribution activities toward the realization of sustainable regional communities in harmony with the environment. It has engaged in forward-looking activities, including ISO14001 certification, registration with UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet), promotion of the Smart Campus Project, and the formulation and announcement of the SDGs-focused “Mie University Environment and SDGs Policy” through cooperation with the regional and international stakeholders.
Mie University is located on a large campus in the bosom of the sea and sky of Ise Bay in a beautiful natural environment surrounded by “Sansui,” the “three greens” of forest, ocean, and sky. It is a university where students can feel closeness to nature while they study. Yet with the terrible heat waves of summer, record torrential rainfall, overflowing rivers, powerful typhoons, and other abnormal conditions in recent years, it would seem that we are not simply facing climate change but are confronting a climate crisis.
To maintain an earth environment where mankind and other living things can sustain life amid the climate change brought about by human activities after the Industrial Revolution, not only do all of us need to be aware of the preciousness of the environment around us, but social reforms aimed at resolving environmental issues on a global scale are also necessary. For this purpose, the wisdom and actions of mankind must be mobilized to uncover the causes of climate change and search for solutions.
Mie University advocates “Harmonious Coexistence of Nature and Mankind” in its basic philosophy. Environmental endeavors are a major pillar in the University’s education, research, and social contribution activities. In terms of the important global issue of carbon neutrality, we believe that in addition to carbon neutrality of the University’s campus, it is also important to participate in social activities relating to green innovation in cooperation with the production industries, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. Through the activities of The Mie Global Environment Center for Education and Research(MieGECER) and The Regional Co-creation Deployment Center of the Mie Regional Plan Co-creation Organization, the five faculties and six graduate schools of the University will engage in environmental projects in cooperation with various regions in the prefecture.
We believe that deepening our common consciousness and understanding of “building a sustainable society” and “realizing a carbon neutral society” and working on environmental management and SDGs through a global industry-government-academia-citizen partnership are the most important missions for us who live in the 21st century.
As a comprehensive university, Mie University will fulfill its University Social Responsibility (USR) by promoting research in various fields and cultivating glocal environmental human resources for the next generation through close cooperation with industry, administrative agencies, and educational institutions, as well as international environmental cooperation across national boundaries, in order to foster human resources to support society. Furthermore, as an intellectual hub, Mie University will cooperate with stakeholders in Japan and overseas to play a leadership role in creating shared value (CSV) by building a sustainable carbon neutral society.
